My DIY device isn't showing up as a game controller, but the UI recognises it fine?

(NB: This is for DIY devices only; the advice does not apply to Pro users)
Assuming you're running a standard, unmodified firmware, some users have reported this in Windows 10 following a system-initiated USB driver update on their system. Windows forcibly updates drivers for a USB 3.0 controller on their motherboard (ASMedia is a typical example) but this driver isn't actually fully compatible, and the game controller never shows up afterwards.
The solution is to roll back the driver update or remove the drivers and re-install those provided with your motherboard, or move the device to a different USB port running a different USB controller.
